The History of Hill Street, the second of the walking tours this week, took place Tuesday 22 July. It started at the Town Hall and finished at Lower Hill Street/Variety Market.
It concentrated on commercial history mostly though included references to famous individuals associated with Newry’s premier street. The facilitator, Séamus Mac Dhaibhéid of Newry Branch Gaelic League/Gaeláras, was well- armed with information, anecdotes and artefacts that illuminated aspects of the fascinating story of the Liberty/Low Ground.
Participants were especially interested in the hands-on access to materials pertaining to the pawnshop on Lower Hill Street.
This tour is part of the ongoing Oriel Connects Us-Oirialla a Thugann le Chéile Sinn project funded by International Fund for Ireland.
