Cadger's pad through the cooley mountains !!!!!!!!

Meitheal’ is a grand Irish word for a co-operative working group, and that is exactly what we had out on the Cadgers’s Pad through the Cooley Mountains today. Thirty fence-posts now mark the tricky trail from Tullagh Bridge in Omeath to Iomaire Fada, the summit ridge where a clear and easy track leads down towards Ravensdale. From the car park at the bridge you will be able to see twin white-topped posts. They mark the start of a slightly sunken path dug out by thousands of feet over hundreds of years. It climbs along the southern slopes of Tullagh Glen, skirting around Sloan’s Mari (booley hut) before climbing the sharp zigzags of the Molly Wee onto the ridge. Take a hike along it and give a thought to the young people, mostly girls, who carried creels of herring this way to the market. Today’s work was in preparation for our first annual Cadgers’ Walk on Saturday 25th June. It will be bilingual, part of a whole day of events in and around Omeath, so bring your cúpla focal. Míle buíochas to more than a dozen volunteers who turned out to do the work, and to Omeath District Development who paid for the fence-posts and are the key organiser of of our big day on 25th June.

Young Womens Group

We will be running taster sessions for our young womens group on a Friday afternoon in the youth cafe for the next few weeks.

Cadgers Pad

Call for volunters: Cadgers’ Pad Sat 6th
Ever since we rediscovered the original Cadgers’ Pad about ten years ago we have tried to mark it clearly. We painted little fish on the rocks several times but wind and rain got rid of them. We hammered little wooden markers into the ground but the sheep got rid of them by using them as scratching posts. Now thanks to Omeath District Development we have got something more substantial that is in keeping with the landscape – light 4-foot fenceposts. These will be sledgehammered deep enough to withstand scratchers, within sight of each other from the gate at Tullagh up to Iomaire Fada, the ridge at the top of the Molly Wee.
We meet at Tullagh Bridge at 1:30pm Saturday 6th November. We should have a sheepfarmer’s quad which will carry the heavy stuff including me, because only myself and Andrew McGuinness know just where to put the posts. Come along for the walk and the craic and we can have a talk about how to make the Cadgers’ Pad walk an annual event to mark the great turnout we had on 19th June to make the video. If you haven’t seen it yet, go to this link.https://youtu.be/fLf6VCWqGtQ

Celebration of training

Yesterday evening we were delighted to invite members of our women’s group to the Dolmen Centre along with facilitators who have provided training over the past 12 months. Although not the high scale celebration event these ladies deserve, it was lovely to host a mini graduation evening to acknowledge their amazing achievements throughout a challenging year. We had representatives from Maynooth NUI, TWN, Mediation NI and Louth Leader Partnership, all whom spoke highly and in awe of this group’s achievements that they juggled alongside home schooling, zoom difficulties and the global COVID19 pandemic

Community Biodiversity

Action Plan for Omeath

This Community Biodiversity Action Plan has been created with a grant from The Community
Foundation for Ireland (CFI) Environment and Nature Biodiversity programme. Omeath District Development CLG were successful with their grant

application to Community Foundation Ireland. They partnered with Simon Barron, an Ecologist
with BEC Consultants Ltd, for this project to bring together the plan since 2019.
The Community Biodiversity Action Plan (CBAP) for Omeath is intended to work towards the
promotion and celebration of biodiversity within the village and the surrounding area and to provide
a plan by which the biodiversity can be enhanced. It was therefore important that all of the Omeath
area be covered by the CBAP.

Omeath Through The Ages

On behalf of Omeath District Development we would like you to join us and local Historian Seamus Murphy to take a look at OMEATH THROUGH THE CENTURIES.
A one-hour Zoom tour of life on the lough shore through 80 centuries
Monday 15th March 2021, 7:30PM
Zoom codes will be posted later in the week. Please follow us on our Facebook page for updates.
This is what the very first inhabitants of Omeath may have looked like. In 2015 a team of archaeologists checked out the proposed site for the Narrowwater bridge at Ferry Wood and found evidence of a Stone-age settlement from before 6000 BC (The very earliest traces of human settlement in Ireland date to around 7500 BC). These were hunter-gatherers who mainly combed the shore for shellfish, but they also hunted deer and cooked them in communal pits like the one found on the mountainside near McStay’s Wood.

We are running our auction from Monday the 1st of February until Monday the 8th of February , How we will run it is we have 7 wonderful paintings done by local artist Raymond Hunt here in the dolmen Centre. We have 2 of Omeath and 5 of our favourite Heroes and Villains, I will pop description and dimensions under each painting. You can follow our auction on our Facebook page what we ask is if people would like to place a bid on one of the paintings please pop your bid under the painting you would like and the highest bid on Monday the 8th @12 pm gets the painting.
We are running this auction to continue the delivery of our Youth and Women’s programmes and community social inclusion events in the Dolmen Centre, Omeath
We’ve all felt the pinch and the additional pressures this year due to COVID 19. We’ve had to close our doors for the second time in the Dolmen Centre, Omeath, and this has meant stopping all our in person classes and activities which support us financially and allow us to deliver our programmes, social and community support services to the community.
With that in mind we are launching this Go Fund Me Page and will be doing several community activities over the month of December to help raise much needed funds to continue the delivery of personal, social and educational development programmes for the youth, women and elderly living in the community.
We are starting our fundraising with our Virtual Christmas 5km walk over the month of December, anything up to 5km within our restrictions due to covid 19. Alone, with your family, with the dog, and share your progress with us through our Facebook page. Not wanting to take part in the walk that is fine, all we ask is you share our fundraiser with family, Friends and even the neighbours.
Thank you for your support it is greatly appreciated.

Pride of Place 2020

The village of Omeath has been nominated by Louth County Council to represent County Louth under the Annual Pride of Place Awards 2020 under the Coastal Village section of the national competition.

We are delighted to share with you the video of “Omeath Pride of Place 2020” showing the positive contribution that community groups, local schools and businesses make to our community and eagerly await the decision of the judges to announce the winners of the competition at the end of November.
