Lislea (The Grey Fort) holds the secrets of the last Gaelic speakers of the area, their homesteads can still be visited and stories of the flight of the “Fadgies” from Omeath to Belfast bringing with them the Gaelic tongue can still be heard.
Speakers of Irish existed in Omeath until the middle of the 20th century. The last native speaker of Omeath Irish was Anne O’Hanlon, who died in 1960 aged 89.
