The First Akira Miyawaki Forest on the Cooley Peninsula has just been planted!!!
As part of the Omeath District Development Biodiversity Programme we have just planted an Akira Miyawaki Forest in our off site Biodiversity Allotment, and each plant is marked with its own unique red label.
We will share updates of the development of our Japanese inspired forest at regular intervals.
Akira Miyawaki was a Japanese botanist who developed the idea of planting trees and shrubs in tightly packed groups on small patches of land to promote rapid growth of the plants creating a bio diverse environment in a much faster time than usual.

Our bio diversity site was grazed by sheep for some years so very little plants were able to grow. Now that it is being let grow flowers and plants are coming back to the area most notably bluebells and Cuckooflower in April.

The first beehive has arrived at our bio diversity site. Hopefully they will get to work pollinating our fruit trees which are nearby.

Our planted trees at the bio diversity site are coming into leaf at the moment

No Swifts yet but a couple of House Sparrows have taken up residence at the Dolmen centre in one of our swift boxes.

Things are blooming here in the Dolmen Centre Garden this morning…gooseberries taste amazing, wild flowers popping with colour and waiting for time to dig up the new season potatoes and taste our first crop of apples.
