The talk is based on the Census returns of 1901 and 1911 and other anecdotal reports of the Irish Language in this period and the information these reports give on the decline of the language in the course of the 19th Century in South Armagh and North County Louth.

As the Gaelic language died out, slowly and painfully, it left indelible marks on the way we speak English and even on the way we think and our strong sense of place. Here in North Louth and South Armagh where the language persisted until well into the 20th century, we are still close to that other, ancient way of thinking about landscape, family and community. But we are no longer conscious of the connections that could tell us just who we are and where we came from. Most of us are not even aware of how recent the decline of the language is. Ciarán MacMurchaidh will map the connections for us and put us back in touch with the world of a very few generations ago when everyone understood what all the placenames meant.
