There was a good attendance at the autumn lecture in the ongoing series of the Oirghiall a thugann le chéile sinn project on Tuesday evening September 16th in the Dolmen Centre Omeath.
Speaker Seán Mac Labhraí presented a comprehensive summary of the wealth of sources available on our Oirghiall Heritage – ranging from printed books and articles to various online resources, details of the original manuscript materials and information on the treasury of recordings of native speakers and songs from the area. In keeping with the Omeath / Lislea cross-border partnership he focused on the famous work of Séamus Dall Mac Cuarta – Tithe Chorr an Chait – and explored fresh evidence which casts light on this enigmatic satire on the Omeath townland which has become famous for all the wrong reasons.
Equally Seán presented detailed biographical information on Sally Humphries from the doctor’s quarters Lislea. Sally was the last surviving speaker of Irish in the area and renowned for her vast repertoire of song and stories.
There was much engagement from the floor with people present whose personal connections added much to the success of the event.
