Three fascinating talks by Dr. Miriam Moffitt, formerly of St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, and author of Soupers and Jumpers: the Protestant Missions in Connemara, 1848-1937. Dr. Moffitt has a particular interest in the intersection of religious and political identities.
Ireland’s character has been greatly shaped by her religious history and by the ways in which this history has been interpreted and taught. This series of three talks in Lislea will examine the origins and development of Christianity in Ireland over the centuries. We will explore how Ireland’s religious history has been understood within various faith communities and by examining the textbooks used in schools under Catholic, Presbyterian and Church of Ireland management, we will see how different interpretations of Irish church history were transmitted from generation to generation.
